A Las Vegas-based gaming company has proposed a $600 million destination casino in Bonner Springs and Edwardsville.
Golden Gaming Inc. filed its planning and zoning applications Monday in the cities, the company said in a release. The project would be on 200 acres south of Interstate 70 at 110th Street, spreading into both cities.
"After looking at other potential markets nationally for our flagship property, we believe Kansas presents the best opportunity because we have an unmatched site and the best development plan," Golden Gaming Chairman Blake Sartini said in the release. "We are not here as the largest gaming company competing for a Wyandotte County location, but as a midsize gaming company best suited to giving this project the time, attention and focus it deserves."
The casino would include a hotel, spa, restaurants, retail shops, convention and meeting space, an 18-hole championship golf course and entertainment venues, designed by Las Vegas architecture firm Friedmutter Group Inc.
Six-year-old Golden Gaming operates or manages five casinos in Colorado and Nevada, operates 44 Nevada taverns and employs more than 2,200 people.
Casino proposals are due to Edwardsville by Wednesday and to Bonner Springs by Oct. 16.
Five developers turned in six proposals to the Unified Government of Wyandotte County/Kansas City, Kan., on Sept. 24.
City governments can endorse one or more proposals to pass on to the Kansas Lottery Commission, where one will be chosen for the county.
Wyandotte County cities agreed in June to share revenue from a casino and set standards for the project, including a minimum investment of $300 million.
The spark for these projects was the Legislature's approval of expanded gambling in March, but the constitutionality of the statute is still in question. Attorney General Paul Morrison filed an action with the state Supreme Court to rule on the issue, but the court has said the action first must be heard in Shawnee County District Court.
The statute allows groups to build and manage state-owned destination casinos in four locations if county voters approve it, which Wyandotte County voters did in June.
