The Las Vegas Monorail turned one on July 15th. From low ridership to some highly publicized shutdowns of the line, the first twelve months were troubled. Monorail executives believe that is all behind them.



Everything went smoothly on the one-year anniversary for the monorail system. Finally, Monorail executives feel more confident about the operation. Passengers were all smiles when they get off the Las Vegas Monorail. The air-conditioned cars, kept under 80 degrees, get new riders to their destination without a sweat.

Chris Depiero experienced his first trip on the train. "We read about it. We have heard there have been problems with this and that. We are very happy with it, very happy. Nice way to get down the middle of the Strip." Depiero and friends come to Las Vegas for fun about four times a year from Cleveland, Ohio.

They are some of the 6 million passengers the system has carried in the past year. But the numbers are not totally working out for the monorail. The system needs 35,000 people a day to pay the operational and debt costs. Right now, the system is about 5,000 people a day short of that goal.

Las Vegas Monorail spokesman Todd Walker says, "Our sole focus is this four-mile stretch and these seven stations. Making sure that revenues and ridership for the system as it exits today are significant."

The system has been plagued in the past year with mechanical problems -- doors opened mid-track, the computer system overloaded with information, and parts fell off closing the monorail for the longest stretch of 115 days. The company that built and runs the monorail, Bombardier, re-designed the drive train and started service again December 24th. Since then there have been no major stoppages.

Walker says the company still has confidence in Bombardier. "On our side it's definitely there. The system is operating and functioning properly. The numbers tell it, exceeding 98-percent since December of last year."

Clark County inspectors are also glad the system has been reliable recently. But they will inspect the monorail system part by part on this one-year anniversary. It's a review that was scheduled before the monorail started running.

Plans for phase two and three of the monorail have been put on hold. The problems prompted the federal government to turn down a request for tax dollars to fund the downtown extension. An addition to the airport would follow that.

Also, the Las Vegas Monorail company recently re-organized. President Cam Walker, and Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Board Jim Gibson will step down. The Deputy General Manager of the RTC Curtis Myles will take over as the president of the system.
